Q:
Why are the planks ten feet? Can’t I just use twelve?

A:
Although planks are more commonly found in 12’ lengths, 10’ planks are easier to work with. With the brackets spaced out every 8’, 12’ planks would typically create too long an overhang.

With 10’ planks, you can have a safe and even overhang that easily meets the 6”-18” requirement. Also, OSHA has set the maximum span of a 2x4 guardrail at 8 ft. Using Metal rails would allow spans up to 10 feet.
